Our vision for the education of students who are gifted

Students who are gifted excel, or are capable of excelling, in one or more areas such as general intelligence, specific academic studies, visual and performing arts, physical ability, creative thinking, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. Giftedness in a student is commonly characterised by an advanced pace of learning, quality of thinking or capability for remarkably high standards of performance compared to students of the same age.

Although these students are capable of outstanding achievement, the learning environment is pivotal to enabling them to demonstrate and develop their abilities. Students who are gifted are at risk of underachieving and disengaging from learning if they are not identified and catered for appropriately.

Bohlevale State School has a Gifted Education Committee working on new ideas and programs to cater for gifted students. Two programs are currently offered:

ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Bohle Athlete Development Program is an innovative program which caters for gifted students in Years 4-7 across all sporting disciplines. The program aims to develop young sportspeople in terms of their:

  • sporting skills
  • fitness
  • enthusiasm towards sport and school
  • academic work [through sport]
  • sportsmanship and school citizenship

The program offers all Key Learning Areas covered in regular classrooms, however the students in the Athlete Development Program also receive one 60 minute lesson per week focused on developing their physical attributes as athletes. These are conducted by Athlete Development Program teachers in conjunction with coaches from external organisations. In addition students also participate in weekly fitness sessions.

For more information please read the 2009 Athlete Development Program brochure or contact Mr Floyd at the school.
